Too Much On Her Plate | Emotional Eating Solutions | Help With Overeating

How can I fit myself in? How can I make time for me? How do I decide what to do when it ALL seems important? “How do I stop snacking when it’s the only treat I get?”

These questions rotate through my email inbox on an almost daily basis. These are concerns that plague many of you and the issue of whether you can find or make time for yourself or whether it’s “okay” to put yourself first (or even put yourself on your to-do list at all) occupies a lot of mental space.

The key to making it all work?

Stop asking the questions.

That’s right—stop worrying about self-care or asking if your day “will permit” you to take care of yourself. Just do it.

There are some things in life we just do. We do them because we have to or because we have simply accepted that they are a part of the daily requirements of living. Unless you are the parent of a non-sleeping newborn, you probably don’t ask yourself routinely how you can find time to go to the bathroom or brush your teeth and you don't worry about how you will find the time to go to work. You just do these things. Because they are necessary.

You likely don’t agonize about whether you should say “no” to something in order to have time to fill the gas tank in your car because you know that without gas, the car isn’t going to take you anywhere you need to go. You need fuel to operate and you act accordingly. You get the gas.

It’s not a stretch to apply the same logic to your own wellbeing. Really, it isn’t.

But amazingly, many busy, otherwise intelligent women are trying to operate their lives without fuel. And they find themselves overwhelmed, overtired, overeating, and out of mojo.

It’s not working and it’s time to make some major adjustments.

Start by stopping the questions about “can I?” and replacing them with the statements “I need to” and “I know it’s essential that.”

As in, “I need to allow myself time to eat a healthy lunch” and “I know it’s essential that I take time for a walk today because it helps me feel better and less stressed.” “I need to take a break so I’ll be able to refocus on this project and so I don't resort to nervous eating this afternoon.”

Put yourself on the priority list, not off to the side where you list the extra things that you hope to have time for.

Putting yourself first and taking a stand on your own behalf is a declaration, not a question. It isn’t always easy, but the payoff is huge.

Take good care,

Too Much On Her Plate | Emotional Eating Solutions | Help With Overeating

Many smart women struggle with their weight and many busy, successful professional women resort to food to cope with the stress, uncertainty, and other emotions that occur in a full, high-pressure life.

Unfortunately, for many, these battles with food become vicious cycles that look something like this:

“Fresh starts” and plans that don’t work or don’t last, followed by feelings of defeat and inadequacy, followed by overeating and a period of trying to generate motivation (again), followed by another “fresh start.”

This vicious cycle leaves women feeling bad about themselves and ineffective. It also often leads to weight gain instead of weight loss.

If you are a high-achiever—a woman who is successful in many areas of her life who finds herself stuck in this cycle—there is a way out.

Here are three tips to start breaking the yo-yo diet emotional eating cycle:

Let go of the belief that you are alone and the only one struggling like this. If you are caught in this cycle with food and overeating, you’re in some great company. One of the most self-defeating actions you can take is to continue to struggle alone, heaping on self-blame and even shame. Find someone to talk to. Open your eyes to the possibility of support. Ask other women what they do when they struggle. Consider investing in yourself the same way you invest in your career and your family and your home and pursuing emotional eating solutions that can help you.

Take control of perfectionism. You’re human and you’ll never be perfect. Perfectionism or all-or-nothing thinking is common among women who expect a lot of themselves. It can get you stuck in a pattern where making a poor choice is interpreted as “blowing it.” Women trying to lose weight fall for this all the time. Instead of continuing forward and allowing the next choice to be a better one, the tendency is to cash in all your chips and start down a road of overeating because you’re upset with yourself and you “failed.” Plan for imperfection. Train your mind to notice your progress and not just your missteps. Try the “Three Things That Went Well” strategy.

Stop relying on willpower. This is a biggie. You are a high-achiever. You probably have a lot of willpower and stick-to-it-ness in other areas of your life. You may be lost in a mindset of beating yourself up over this cycle you are stuck in. If so, you probably tell yourself things like:

“What’s wrong with me that I can’t get a grip on this?”

“This should be easy.”

“I’m just not trying hard enough.”

“This is an embarrassment and I need to stop being lazy and just take a tough line with myself.”

This is not a Success Soundtrack™. Go back and read my first two tips again. The truth is that you’re stuck because your method isn’t effective. You’re missing something. Start with compassion for yourself for how big and deep and exhausting this struggle is. Try holding yourself in the same positive mental light that you’d hold a dear friend.

Take a deep breath and allow yourself to treat this issue as a legitimate problem. Allow yourself to respect that you are in a tough spot. Instead of blaming yourself, give yourself permission to take the situation seriously.

Now ask yourself what you need that you don’t have that could help. You may be tempted to choose some kind of judgment (“I’m lazy”), but instead, focus on identifying the outside resource or concept that could help (“I'm overloaded and I'm at a loss about how to feel better without overeating. I need some new tools.”).

I find that high-achievers who are stuck in this overeating cycle hesitate (or don’t even think to) ask for:

Help with finding motivation

Help with creating time for themselves

Help with accountability

Help developing new skills and strategies

Help with getting to the root of what’s triggering their overeating

Help. Period.

Approaching the problem with respect and allowing yourself the resources you need to be effective can make a world of difference.

Are you stuck? Are you tired of spinning your wheels and feeling like you are wasting your energy? What small change could you start making today? Leave a comment and share your thoughts.

Take good care,

We don’t talk much about our relationship with money and the truth is that if unexplored, your relationship with money might be holding you back. That’s why I’m hosting a free interview with money expert and psychologist Dr. Maggie Baker on June 29, 2011. You can go here to sign up and get all the details (including how you can access to the recording if you can’t make it to our broadcast). What exactly are money issues and how can our emotions confuse our relationship with money? In this guest post, Dr. Baker shares a dramatic example of how money—like food—can take control of your life when you don’t take charge of the root issues. I hope you’ll come to this interview and learn more about how you can examine your relationship with money.

ADDICTED TO THE “MIRROR” OF POWER AND SUCCESS?

In my book, Crazy About Money: How Emotions Confuse Our Money Choices and What To Do About It, I tell stories about real people I’ve worked with. I was reminded recently of Leslie, a person who presented with anxiety and confusion about being constantly overwhelmed and not able to stay in control of multiple demands on her time. Her story is an excellent cautionary tale for all of us who are hardworking and ambitious.

A high achiever in high school, Leslie graduated from college in three years. Before she knew it she was working her way up the ranks of an international computer company and fast becoming one of their top salespeople. In high school and college she thrived on the being competitive, not particularly with others, she told herself, but to advance her own standard of excellence. What fueled her drive were the responses of praise and admiration from her teachers and professors. When a prof told her she got the winning grade in a course or that she was one of the best students they had ever had, she glowed with pride and hungered for continued praise and affirmation.

The psychic fuel admiring, “mirroring” responses provided for Leslie soon became addicting. Deep in her heart she felt that she could never be good enough, smart enough, athletic enough-you name it, she could only strive to be better. Unconsciously, she had a low opinion of herself because of an emotionally neglectful childhood.

Leslie’s corporate success continued but at a price. Whenever anyone asked her to do something she reflexively agreed, no matter what the cost to her. After a year of constant high achievement and praise for her efforts, she realized that attaining the next level of success would demand more compliance and hard work. She thought of quitting, but couldn’t allow herself to do that. Praise and affirmation had become like oxygen for her over-taxed psyche, not to mention the mirroring glow she felt when she pictured the money she was making, and at such a young age!

Then the day came. She met Joel. Flashy, expansive, full of grand ideas and constant flattery for his new find, Leslie. Within weeks Joel convinced her to quit her job and work for his new, fast growing high tech company. He offered that because of her brilliance and work ethic he would make her a VP of Marketing and Sales and later a full partner. No one had ever made her feel so good so fast. Before she knew it she had quit and started working for Joel’s company. His support and affirmation continued to jet fuel her efforts. She worked 80 hours a week with plans for more. Occasionally Joel would correct her efforts with a sharp comment. When he did, she deflated like a balloon and found herself working harder to get his “mirroring” support back. As time passed he became more critical and sometimes downright cruel. Anxious, she took the sting and tried harder.

Leslie’s pattern with Joel might have continued for a long time. But reality disrupted their relationship when they were both arrested for investor fraud. How could this happen to such a bright, young rising star? It may be hard to believe that the craving for external mirroring and affirmation can be so intense that it can have the power to distort our judgment and blind us to our own and others’ behavior. Leslie’s story is no different from the alcoholic, the drug, food or money addict that allows a substance to control their life. The only way to combat these extreme and self -defeating behaviors is to build a strong, positive and enduring internal sense of self that can self sooth as well as accept affirmation from others, but not at a high cost.

How do I reconcile this and fit in both because they both seem important”

This is one of the most common questions I am asked–how do you choose when everything feels important?

The answer: it’s not easy and you don’t need to worry about getting it perfect–you never will–but you can probably balance things better than they are now.

Start (as you have) by acknowledging that both your needs and your childrens’ needs are important. Not only do you need time for yourself, but by showing your children that you value yourself and your own self-care, you teach them a critical lesson about how to value their own needs and well being.

Don’t get stuck in all-or-nothing thinking. You can’t do it all and you may not have time for 18 holes of golf or a weekend at the spa, but what can you fit in? Don’t dismiss the small stuff. When you determine what’s possible, schedule it. And be sure to ask yourself whether your parenting expectations are realistic and fair. If you are burning the candle at both ends, everyone suffers. Are you being honest with yourself about what you have to give? In the pie chart that is your life, you need a piece too.

Don’t dilute the time you do have. Ten minutes a day with a clear focus and no multitasking can go a long way, whether it’s ten minutes of me-time for you or ten minutes of mindful focus on your children.

Say no and delegate where you can. This applies to your business as well. If you work from home, it may be important to identify when work ends and home life begins.

Be creative. I know parents who run laps around the soccer fields or who have designed creative child care trades in order to attend to their own priorities. Depending on the age of your kids, it might be helpful (and a valuable experience for all) to include them in the strategizing and problem solving around time issues. Have a weekly family meeting where the schedule and the needs of the family (that includes you) are discussed and strategies are formed.

Finally, here are some resources that may help:

I find that the long sunny days, our annual family vacation, and the change of pace all revitalize me and create a new sense of possibility. Of course, I just plain love the change of seasons. I’ll be saying something similar when fall arrives too!

The thing is, I see so many of busy women get excited at the beginning of the season, only to find themselves wondering in a few months, “Where did it go?” Life gets busy, the weeks slide by, and the weight loss, or the me-time, or those special activities just don’t happen. Life is too short for this all-too-familiar pattern!

Every day really is precious, and so are the hopes, dreams, and goals you hope to attain over the summer months. That’s why I’ve decided to make my theme for the season, Your Best Summer Ever.

Let’s make it a season to savor and a time in your life to remember. I want to help you make it successful and juicy and inspired. Let’s make this summer the next essential step to you living your best version of your life. Sound good?

To kick things off, I’m going to host a no-cost teleclass on (you guessed it) the first day of summer: June 21, 2011 at 2pm Pacific, 3pm Mountain, 4pm Central, and 5pm Eastern. The topic:

Tips for THRIVING, Achieving Your Goals, and Living Your Best Life–From this Moment Forward!

	I'll be sharing:

	• Tips you can implement IMMEDIATELY to help you feel and be your best.
• Strategies to help you stay on track so that you don't wake up in September feeling like the summer passed you by.
• Ways to up the passion and the fun factor.
• How to stay on track with your eating and your healthy lifestyle goals during a season of vacations, summer treats, and indulgences.

The plan is to have a fun call that will give you the tips and the momentum you need to start making a real difference. I’ll also be sharing information about my newly available self-paced THRIVE Formula™ Series.

Too Much On Her Plate | Emotional Eating Solutions | Help With Overeating

Your to-do list is a mile long. Your inbox is overflowing. Everyone and their uncle needs your help. You know you really should exercise, eat better, keep a journal, and organize all those photos . . . some day. You are tired, probably stressed, and (if you are human) likely resorting to unhelpful coping strategies like comfort eating, skipping your workouts, or cutting back on sleep. It can feel like a vicious cycle that has no end. How does a busy woman fit it all in, create the me-time and quality self-care she craves, and shift from surviving to thriving?

Answer: she doesn’t.

Superwoman is a Myth

No one can do it all. All of us live days that consist of 24 hours. Accepting the truth that you can’t do everything is a critical step for thriving. In fact, accepting this limitation actually simplifies things and makes moving from survival to thriving MUCH easier.

So, repeat after me:

“I can’t do it all. I can spend my energy with respect and care.”

This declaration can change just about everything.

Say Goodbye to Perfectionism

The idea that you will completely finish, get it all done, or get it all perfect, is unrealistic and stifling. It creates paralysis, procrastination, and a limited perspective.

Perfectionists tend to feel lousy about themselves, afraid (of screwing up), and more stressed than necessary. Rigidly adhering to perfectionism is NOT spending your energy with respect and care. Instead of “getting it perfect,” focus on consistently moving in the right direction. When you ditch perfectionism, it becomes YOUR job to define what and when is enough. Cultivate what Jennifer Louden calls conditions of enoughness—specific definitions of what is reasonable—and practice calling it enough when you achieve them.

Stop Shoulding on Yourself

Spending your energy with care and respect means that YOU need to be deliberate and in charge of where your time and focus goes.

“Is this worth it to me?”

“Is this important?”

“What are the trade-offs of saying yes or no to this task?”

These are the types of questions you want to ask when you step into the driver’s seat of your life. “Shoulds” come from a place of reacting. “Shoulds” tend to be standards that are imposed by others. “I should clean my house/lose ten pounds/make more money.”

A “should” is hardly ever a compelling reason. It lacks conviction. It’s often driven by guilt, or a desire for approval, or a belief that you aren’t good enough. “Shoulds” tend to create stress and attempts at change that don’t last.

In order to thrive and to fit in what’s important, whatever IT is needs to BE convincingly important to you. Know your compelling reason. For example—I am always working to get more vegetables into my diet. Telling myself I “should” doesn’t get me very far. Knowing, from a lifetime of living in my body, that I have more energy and feel better when I eat a balanced diet with lots of vegetables, is much more compelling.

My client Jane (not her real name), told me she “should” lose weight. And she sounded miserable just saying it. However, when we unearthed her compelling reasons (she desperately wanted to be able to travel with ease and fit into airplane seats, be able to get back on a bike and take rides with her daughter, and ease her joint pain so she could get back to dancing–which she used to love), Jane got some real mojo going. She also became very clear that taking care of herself was an essential place to be spending her energy.

Self-care is a Necessity

Do you get it? You’ll never fit it all in—but you can enjoy the journey. When you let go of trying to do it all and start making careful choices, you step into the driver’s seat of your life.

What you do spend your time and energy on will be much more satisfying and of much higher quality if YOU show up primed and in your best form. Your business, your job, your relationships, your life depend on you. YOU are the main ingredient. It’s just like the flight attendants tell you. If you haven’t put your own oxygen mask on, you won’t have much to offer others no matter how strongly you want to help them.

If you are determined to get the most out of your life and your 24 hour day, pay yourself first. Claiming the time for you and the health you crave is not a luxury—it’s an investment that will pay you back over and over again.

Thriving is Not a Destination—it is the Journey

Accept your limitations (with relief), spend your time and energy with care and respect, and pay yourself first. You won’t get it perfect (guaranteed!), but this formula will keep you on the path to creating a life that works for you.

Take good care,

That's why I’ve created a program that I am SO excited about. It’s custom designed to provide what you have been telling me you are looking for. Because I designed it specifically for Too Much On Her Plate readers, I’m telling you about it first—and sharing it at a very special pre-release price.

The How to Put Yourself First 7 Day Blast-off Program is now available. Learn how to fit yourself in—without being selfish.

Who is this for? Well, you probably want to take a look at this program if you are craving:

A simple, straightforward plan for putting yourself on your priority list

A method for staying connected with yourself

A strategy and mindset shift that allows you to claim time for YOU without feeling guilty, or like you were neglecting something that was more important

Ways to help you start ditching self-blame, perfectionism that keeps you stuck, and start learning to treat yourself as nicely as you probably treat the rest of the world

My 7 Day Blast-off Program shows you how to start doing this and more. All in effective do-able steps that won't overwhelm you.

	http://HowtoPutYourselfFirst.com

As a psychologist, I know a lot about what it takes to create lasting change. Success requires the right tools + the right strategies + the right information–oh yes–and a plan for IMPLEMENTING all the good stuff! This program works because it's smart, simple and it is something you can actually complete–even when you are busy.

Listen to the short audios and use the blueprint sheets to follow the do-able steps each day (all delivered daily to your email inbox) and by the end of one week:

You will be regularly taking time out of your busy life just for you. I'll show you how to start breaking the habit of neglecting yourself and how to prioritize your own needs even when you are time-crunched.

You'll be talking back to perfectionism and other mindset traps that may have sabotaged you in the past–you know–the voices that tell you you don't have time, you don't deserve it, you aren't good enough, or "there are more important things to do."

You'll know how to identify the valuable places where you want to spend your time and energy, and you'll know how to move forward without overwhelming yourself.

You will have a plan to fuel yourself so that you create more energy and are less likely to binge or resort to stress eating.

You'll have a set of strategies and tools for keeping yourself at the top of your priority list–where you belong!

My goal with this 7 Day program is to take you from STUCK to ACTION. I'm going to walk you through the steps so that you actually:

Create (and take) Me-time

Craft your winning mindset

Find out how to take action without getting stressed or overwhelmed

Learn some of my best tricks for making it as simple and struggle-free as possible

All this in daily, easy-to-digest bites.

http://HowtoPutYourselfFirst.com

Now is your chance to jump on the bandwagon and grab some hefty savings. Order today and you’ll get the complete 7 Day Put Yourself First Blast-off Package, the daily audios, daily emails and tips, blueprint sheets, and bonuses for only $29.99—but only for a few weeks. I finished the Twin Cities Marathon which runs from Minneapolis to St. Paul Minnesota. Even better, the Minneapolis area is where my parents live, so I was cheered on by my parents, my sister (who surprised me and flew in from New York for the day), my cousins, and my youngest son. It was an event I will remember forever. (That’s me at the end of the race, surrounded by my support team!)

I told a coaching client today that I’ve never completely appreciated the value of having someone believe in me, encourage me, and motivate me the way I appreciated it at mile 20 of the 26.2 mile course when I saw my family there yelling encouragement, waving signs and motivating me to KEEP RUNNING.

At mile 24, when my brain told me I really needed to stop, I remembered the support of the coach and the group I usually run with and how they have helped me learn that I CAN do things I think I can’t. So I didn’t stop. I kept running. All through the race, I was motivated by both the strangers who were cheering and the encouraging words I had received leading up to the event.

The right support can be the crucial ingredient when you face a challenge. And too often, we short change ourselves in this area. We may try to fool ourselves by saying that we are being “self-reliant” or “independent,” but let’s face it—the most successful people in the world typically have a solid team of support, expertise, and knowledge behind them. Going it alone will only take us so far.

Coaching, at least the life and wellness coaching that I offer, is designed to provide the type of high quality, one-on-one, personalized support that meets you where you need it so that you can accomplish your goals. Every week I coach women who are losing we ight, transitioning in their careers, growing their businesses, blossoming in their relationships, and unsnarling their lives so they move from “surviving” to thriving. I’ve spent years learning the techniques, strategies, skills and information that help my clients create the results they weren’t able to achieve on their own.

This fall, I’m offering a very special opportunity to participate in individual coaching with me. If you have been interested in working with me individually, this is something that I strongly encourage you to take a look at. For a small number of clients, I have slots available to work with me over a six month period. As your coach, I’ll help you design and implement a customized plan for accomplishing your goals. I’ll coach you through the hurdles and challenges that may have gotten you stuck in the past, and we’ll work together to stay in action during the sometimes tricky holiday season and well into the new year.

We’ll start by getting very clear on your goals and the easiest way for YOU to begin seeing results and then we’ll design the do-able action steps to get you there. You’ll have weekly accountability and email access to me, regularly scheduled coaching phone calls, and in January, you’ll have a free ticket to my first every day-long “Live Your Best Year Ever” virtual group retreat. You’ll attend by phone and computer (from the comfort of your home) and I’ll help you get on track, prepared, and motivated to thrive in 2011. This day-long event alone is going to be amazing. The entire six month program is going to be VERY special.

If what I am describing resonates with you, just go here and let us know that you are interested and we’ll send you more information. In order to ensure that the program is a good fit, I’ll be personally conducting phone consultations with all appl icants and we’ll be filling the available spots on a first-come-first served basis.

As always, if you have any questions, just email those too and we will get back to you as quickly as we can.

Take good care,
