Mindfulness And The Unexpected Peacock

DSCN0231Today was looking like a very busy day with lots of appointments and tasks. This morning I headed out for my run with a lot on my mind. I was stopped short—literally—by something I had never seen before. Standing two feet in front of me (on my front porch), and blocking my way out of the house, was a full grown peacock.

I’ve never seen a peacock in my city neighborhood before, and after I took this picture, he disappeared surprisingly quickly. I have no idea where he came from or where he went.

I’ve been thinking about that impressive and beautiful bird all day. Here’s what I realized. If I hadn’t almost tripped over him, I’m not sure I would have even seen him. Had he been perched on my neighbor’s porch, would I have noticed? I’m afraid I was so intent on the future of my day that I wasn’t really very aware of what was around me. What else do I miss when I’m so focused on the future that I’m not really in the present? What amazing sights, sounds and experiences are out there that I don’t even absorb?

Here’s my challenge for you today. Take a deep breath. Slow down. Look for peacocks. Apparently they can show up at anytime.

Take good care,

Melissa
